English Language Proficiency Requirements -ESOL
Individuals who were born outside the United States mainland and whose native language is not English, or those who have educational credentials form other countries or American protectorates must satisfy an English proficiency requirement as a condition of enrollment.
For admission into academic course work, students must document that they satisfy the English language proficiency requirement by one of the following methods:
- Submit a minimum score of 525 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) paper test or 193 on the computer test.
- Submit an official transcript documenting at least two years' attendance and graduation form an accredited high school in the United States.
- Submit passing scores on all parts of the English version of the General Educational Development (GED) examination.
- Submit an official transcript form an accredited college or university in the United States indicating that a college-level English course has been taken and passed. Successful completion of college-level courses in areas other than English may be considered by the admissions director as satisfying the English proficiency requirement.
- Submit a minimum score of 70% on each of the three sections (essay, grammar, and oral) of the English Proficiency Exam administered by San Jacinto College.
- Submit a minimum score of 67% on the Combined English Language Skills Assessment (CELSA) test.
- Submit scores indicating a skill level of 6 in the Reading and Writing sections of the Texas Academic Skills Program (TASP) test or approved alternative test(s).
- Submit other documentation to the admissions director that would clearly indicate that the English language requirement has been met.
