Advanced Electricity

Course Description: 

This course provides advanced electrical instruction and skill building in installation and servicing of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment, including detailed instruction in motors and power distribution motors, motor controls, and applications of solid state devices. Prerequisite: HART 1441, HART 1445 or department chair approval (4:3-3)

Student Learning Outcomes: 
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
A. Be able to recognize more advanced series/parallel circuits.
B. Be able to perform troubleshooting on basic electrical circuits with little instruction.
C. Identify and explain the main parts of three-phase motors and compressors, winding configurations (delta and wye), how to change motor rotation and writing for high or low voltage.
D. Identify and explain how motor starters operate and how overloads function in a starter.
E. Identify and explain heating and cooling thermostats, gas valves, oil burner controls and fan/limit switches.
F. Explain the operation and function of high-pressure, low-pressure and oil failure switches.
G. Explain the operation of a defrost timer and the proper defrost conditions.
H. Be able to identify and discuss electronic devices used in HVAC controls, control boards and printed circuit boards.
I. Identify the major parts associated with an electrical furnace, gas heating system, oil heating system and be able to demonstrate the functions of these systems and how to troubleshoot problems associated with these systems.
J. Be able to adapt simple air conditioning concepts to more advanced air conditioning designs. (I.E., window units compared to package units).
K. Be able to identify and explain the different components associated with a heat pump and show their function and how to troubleshoot this type of air conditioner
L. Identify the main components of reach-in freezers, reach-in coolers, icemakers and how to perform troubleshooting on these refrigeration systems.
M. Be able to discuss Direct Digital Controls (DDC) Systems.
N. Discuss in general the basic function of pneumatic controls and chill water systems (reverse and direct acting).
O. Be able to briefly discuss flotronics and centrifugal chillers

Withdrawal Policy: 
Faculty will not drop students. Students starting college for the first time in fall 2007 or after may only receive six grades of W ( grade received from a course dropped after the census date) from all Texas public colleges and universities attended. Grades of W in developmental courses or courses taken while in high school will not count in the six grades of W. After six grades of W are received, students must receive grades of A, B, C, D, or F in all courses. There are other exemptions from the six-drop limit and students should consult with a Counselor/Educational Planner before they drop courses to determine these exemptions. Students receiving financial aid must get in touch with the Financial Aid Office before withdrawing from a course.
Repeat Rule: 
If a course is subject to the repeat rule, a student may take the course two times and pay the regular tuition. The third time, the student will be charged an additional $60.00 of tuition per credit hour for the third or subsequent time taken.

Graduation Information: 
Upon completion of degree and/or certificate requirements, the student must apply for graduation for the credential to be awarded. There is no fee to apply for graduation. The student completes a Degree Evaluation online using SOS. Confirm that all requirements for the degree or certificate are completed or in progress. Print a copy and bring it to the Educational Planning and Counseling office or Enrollment Services office. Submit a Request for Final Graduation Verification with the Degree Evaluation to the campus Enrollment Services office by (date). This date is provided by the individual instructor.
