Different Steps for Different Categories

International students come to us in many ways. Some are already in the U.S. while others are coming here for the first time from their home country. There are certain admission steps you must take according to which category you fall into. Just click the one that applies to you. Students Residing Outside the U.S.

We will need official transcripts or notarized copies from your high school, as well as any colleges or universities you have attended – either in the U.S. or abroad. We also need proof that you have had these transcripts evaluated by an accepted evaluation company from this list.

Since classes at San Jacinto College are taught in English, proficiency is required for students whose native language is not English.  Test scores allow us to accurately advise students into classes that will offer the best opportunity for success.  Depending on your scores, you may be admitted to our academic programs or required to enter our English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program to continue building your English skills.

You may be admitted in the ESOL Program with a minimum score of:

TOEFL

450 (Paper-Based Test)

  45 (Internet-Based Test)

Compass ESL

64 (Reading); 64 (Listening); 64 (Grammar);

IELTS

Band 4 range

Note: If you score below these levels, you can improve your English through the non-credit ESL program, which is taught through our Continuing & Professional Development division.

Native students from the following countries are exempt from proving English proficiency:

Australia, The Bahamas, Belize, Bermuda, Botswana, Cameroon, English speaking Canadian provinces, Cayman Islands, Fiji Islands, Gambia, Ghana, Guyana, Jamaica, Kenya, Liberia, Malta, Nauru, New Zealand, Nigeria Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Tobago Trinidad, United Kingdom, Virgin islands, West Indies, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

 

We want to make sure your education won’t be interrupted by lack of finances, so we require proof that you have at least $20,000 U.S. dollars of financial support. This is the estimated educational and living expense for one year at sanjac. If you’re bringing family we will need proof of an additional $5,000 for your spouse and $2,500 for each child.

There are two ways you can provide this proof:

Affidavit of Support This is for U.S. citizens and permanent residents. It should be filled out by the person who will financially sponsor you. It must be notarized / certified.

Letter of Financial Backing This is for non U.S. citizens and non residents. It should be filled out by the person who will financially sponsor you. It must be notarized / certified.

Your sponsor must also provide one of the following, showing amounts in U.S. dollars:

A U.S. Income Tax Return statement.

A statement on bank letterhead and signed by a bank official that certifies the sponsor’s name, date the account was opened, average balance, and affirmation that deposits have been made over the last year.

A statement from an employer on company letterhead and signed by a supervisor that certifies the sponsor’s name, date of hire, permanent or temporary status, job description, and salary.

 

You need your I-20 in order to apply for your F-1 Student Visa at the U.S. Embassy.

The I-20 Release Form must be filled out only if another person in the U.S. needs to receive any of your application documents, including your I-20.

Once we receive all of your documents, an International Counselor will send your I-20 in the mail. Your SEVIS ID number will appear in the upper right corner of the form, and our school code will be at the bottom of box 2. You’ll need these for the next step.

Take your official I-20 to the American Embassy in your home country to apply for your F-1 Student Visa. This allows you to come to the United States and enroll at San Jacinto College.

This $200 fee covers the cost to issue and maintain your F-1 Student Visa. The payment must be accompanied by Form I-901, and there are three ways you can submit it:

On the Internet This is the fastest and easiest method. You can fill out Form I-901 online and pay the fee by credit or debit card. Be sure to print out your receipt.

By mail You can send a paper Form I-901 along with an international money order or check from a U.S. bank, payable to: I-904 Student/Exchange Visitor Processing Fee. By Western Union Quick Pay Service Go to a Western Union location and ask for the Blue Form that says “Payment Services” or “Quick Pay” at the top. This allows you to pay in your country’s currency and send the I-901 and the payment electronically.
 

Transfer Students Residing Inside the U.S.

Download the form and fill out the top half. Then, have your international advisor at your current school fill out the bottom half.

SEVIS Transfer Release Form

 

We will need a copy of the first page of your passport showing your name, date of birth, and expiration date.  The expiration date must be more than six months away. We also need a copy of the Visa page from your passport, your I-94 card (Front and Back), and all previous I-20s.

The Information Release Form must be filled out only if another person in the U.S. needs to receive any of your application documents, including your I-20.

Concurrently enrolled in another college

Go to your international student advisor at your current school and get a letter that states you are eligible to attend both schools at the same time.
