San Jacinto College Foundation to host ‘Building a Brighter Future’ gala

PASADENA, Texas – Hundreds of guests are expected to attend the San Jacinto College Foundation “Building a Brighter Future” gala, set for Friday, May 16, 2014, in the San Jacinto College South Campus allied health and science building.

This year’s gala is co-chaired by the Honorable El Franco Lee, Commissioner, Harris County Precinct 1, and his wife Kaye; and the Honorable Jack Morman, Commissioner, Harris County Precinct 2, and his wife, Andi. The event will raise money to help build the endowment for the Promise for Their Future scholarship fund. Radio DJ Al Farb will emcee the event, which will feature live music from the Eclipse Band & Orchestra, as well as a live auction and prize drawing.

The gala will honor Rose and John Moon, Sr., longtime supporters of San Jacinto College. The couple will receive the first-ever San Jacinto College Foundation Legacy Award, in appreciation of their continued support of student success through scholarships.

“We empower students to achieve their goals, while helping our communities and local industry meet their growing needs,” said Ruth Keenan, San Jacinto College Foundation executive director. “We are excited to invite guests to our South campus to showcase our exceptional facilities, while raising money to help our students who may have little or no other access to higher education. It will be a fun evening for all.”

Table sponsorships, which include gala tickets and other recognition, are available at a variety of levels, from $1,000 to $50,000. Individual gala tickets can also be purchased for $250.

Sponsors to date include Melvin Cowart, Steve Cowart, Texas Citizens Bank, Thompson & Horton LLP, JP Morgan Chase, members of the San Jacinto College Administration, The Lubrizol Corporation, Higman Marine Services, Dinkar and Bharati Chheda, Bay-IBI Group Architects, Stephen and Martha Gillett, and Joy Niday.

First year student, Shanna, said her scholarship is freeing her from the worry that comes with financial burden. “Suffering from a debilitating eye disease, it has not been easy to juggle school and maintain an exemplary academic record. I am truly grateful for the assistance that I am receiving because of the thoughtfulness of donors. Thank you for your generous support making scholarships possible.” Upon graduation, Shanna plans to work as an ophthalmic surgery assistant so she can “make a difference in the lives of people who suffer from similar debilitating vision conditions.”

The San Jacinto College South Campus is located at 13735 Beamer Road in Houston. For more information, or to purchase tickets or sponsor the gala, please contact the San Jacinto College Foundation at 281-998-6104.
