HOUSTON – The San Jacinto College women’s basketball team, which includes only one returner and 13 new players, recently hosted its first big event of the season – Jam the Gym, an inner-squad scrimmage that allowed fans to meet this year’s team.

First-year head coach Brenita Williams-Jackson liked what she saw at the scrimmage. “Overall, I was impressed with the team’s hustle, effort, and execution of our system, so I see they are starting to buy in,” she commented. “We still have work to do in order to get to where we want to be. We need to get better on ball defense and develop more discipline offensively.”

Williams-Jackson said the team will face some well-coached and talented teams in Region XIV action. “Last year, Trinity Valley finished number one in the nation, and Blinn finished eighth, so those will be the teams to beat in this conference,” she said.

The coach says fans can expect to see a highly competitive team that plays with a lot of energy. “We will play aggressively on defense, and push the ball on offense to create a fun game for players and fans,” she commented. “Our goal is to finish number one, so every practice, meeting, and film session revolves around that goal. So far, the team is up for the challenge and we expect to be playing in Kansas in March for nationals.”

The home opener for the San Jacinto College women’s basketball team will be Nov. 5 at 5:30 p.m. when the team faces off against McLennan Community College. All games are free, open to the public, and are played at the North Campus in Nichols Gymnasium, 5800 Uvalde Road. For a complete schedule, please visit www.sanjacsports.com.
