San Jacinto College softball best in Texas

5/16/08 - PLANT CITY, Florida – After playing three games on Friday, the San Jacinto College softball team is the only Texas team remaining in the 2008 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I Fast Pitch National Championship. San Jac put away McLennan Community College of Waco, Texas (MCC) in their first game of the day and Wabash Valley College (WVC) put away Midland College of Midland, Texas, leaving San Jac as the only Texas team left in the national championship.

San Jac came out hitting in the first game against MCC. In the second inning , San Jac drove in one run, only to be answered in the bottom of the inning by MCC to keep the score tied at one all. The game would remain scoreless for four innings until San Jac drove in two runs in the sixth to go up 3-1. SJC held MCC to that score and advanced to the next round where they faced WVC.

San Jac’s sticks were on fire early against WVC driving in three runs in the first inning. San Jac came out on top 11-6 against WVC.

In their third game of the day against Spartanburg Methodist College (SMC), San Jac continued their hitting spree. In the bottom of the third inning, with two runners on, Tasha Rotramel (Lake Jackson, TX) hit a two run RBI driving in Cheyenne Parent (Guy, TX) and Stacy McLeod (Pasadena, TX). With Rotramel on second and Krystal Plummer (Angleton, TX) on third, Janet Rendon (Houston, TX) smashed a deep one to centerfield driving in both Rotramel and Plummer. Keeping up the pattern, Kelsey McClain (Pasadena, TX) drove in Rendon, making it 5-0 to end the third.

Energized and focused from the previous inning, San Jac stepped back onto the field in the fourth inning wanting more runs. They quickly loaded the bases with no outs. Rotramel was back at the plate and drove in McLeod off a sacrifice fly. Plummer would score of a pass ball making it 7-0. Rendon was next in line and drove in Parent. Brittany Boren (Bryan, TX) then drove in Rendon to end the inning at 9-0.

NJCAA rules state that if a team is winning by at least eight runs after five innings, the game is over. Knowing this, San Jac stepped onto the field three outs shy of ending the game. SMC stayed alive by getting a few runners on base, but it was no match for San Jac’s defense, and the game was called after five with a final score of 9-0.

McClain had another stellar performance in game three, pitching a two hit shutout, and she gets wins in all three games for the day. San Jac is guaranteed to walk away from the national championship with at least a fourth-place finish.

San Jac next faces top-ranked, and top-seeded, Santa Fe Community College at 9 a.m. (CDT), Saturday, May 17, 2008, in Plant City, FL. For a complete 2008 NJCAA Division I Fast Pitch National Championship bracket and updates, please visit www.internationalsoftball.com.

San Jacinto College softball falls to Wallace State CC, 5-2

5/15/08 - PLANT CITY, Florida – Uncharacteristic play on both sides of the field led to a San Jacinto College 5-2 loss to Wallace State Community College (WSCC) in second round action at the 2008 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I Fast Pitch Softball National Championship.

On San Jac’s defensive side, several early errors led to three of the five early runs scored against them. WSCC came out swinging and San Jac (38-16) quickly fell behind 5-0 after three innings. “We fell behind so quickly that we lost a lot of momentum,” said head coach Kelly Saenz. “Between us falling behind so early and all the defensive errors, we made it a difficult game for ourselves.”

On the offensive end San Jac was able to get runners on base in almost every inning but it wasn’t until the sixth that they were finally able to drive in two runs. Unfortunately for San Jac it wasn’t enough for them to close the gap and the score would remain 5-2 in favor of WSCC.

The national championship is double elimination and San Jac’s hopes for a national title remain alive. San Jac will face McLennan Community College at 10 a.m. (CDT), Friday, May 16, 2008 at the Plant City Stadium and Randy L. Larson Four-Plex. San Jacinto College softball defeats Tallahassee CC, 5-2

5/15/08 - PLANT CITY, Florida – Finding their groove in the late innings in round one of the 2008 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I Fast Pitch National Championship, San Jacinto College’s softball team defeated Tallahassee Community College (TCC) 5-2.

San Jac (38-15) started the game swinging putting two runners on base, but they were unable to bring them home. TCC scored early in the game driving in one run in the second, but the two teams would go scoreless until the seventh.

San Jac’s Stephanie Runge (League City, TX) and Brittany Boren (Bryan, TX) quickly got on base in the seventh and were driven in off of Alex Naschke’s (League City, TX) triple to deep right field, making the score 2-1. TCC would then tie it up at two all with a one run homer in the bottom of the seventh.

Building off the slight awakening of the bats in the seventh, San Jac quickly put two runners on in the top of the eighth. San Jac’s second basemen, Janet Rendon (Houston, TX), then stepped up to the plate and drove in Cheyenne Parent (Guy, TX) putting San Jac up 3-2. With two runners on, Kelsey McClain (Pasadena, TX) drove in Krystal Plummer (Angleton, TX) and Rendon.

Going into the bottom of the eighth, San Jac was on top 5-2. McClain took the mound and continued to produce solid pitching to finish off TCC and get the win. “When they tied it up in the seventh, I knew we still had a shot to win it in extra innings,” said fifth-year head coach Kelly Saenz. “I couldn’t have asked for a better time for the girls to start hitting like they did. It really made for a good game.”

San Jac will play Wallace State Community College at 7 p.m. (CDT), Thursday, May 15, 2008, in Plant City, Florida. For a complete 2008 NJCAA Division I Fast Pitch National Championship bracket and updates, please visit www.internationalsoftball.com.
