San Jac sweeps Region XIV weekly volleyball honors

PASADENA, Texas – San Jacinto College sophomore Christie Dorch and freshmen Amanda Deem and Nadejda Ivanova have been named the Region XIV player, libero and setter of the week, respectively, for the week of Oct. 12-16, 2009.

The three led San Jac to victories over conference rivals Wharton County Junior College (25-13, 20-25, 21-25, 25-12, 15-12) and Lee College (17-25, 25-17,25-27, 25-20, 15-11).

Dorch, a 6-0 right side hitter from Friendswood (Friendswood HS / University of New Hampshire) led San Jac in kills in both matches with 18 against Wharton County and 19 against Lee, for a 3.7 kills per set average. She had 106 attempts and only 16 errors for the week. In addition, she added three total blocks, three service aces and two assists. Dorch was solid on defense for San Jac as well, hitting the court for 36 digs. For the season she has recorded 12 double-doubles. Dorch ranks 27th in the nation in kills per set with a 3.12 average.

Deem, a 5-7 libero from Pearland (Pearland HS), was consistent in passing and showed a tenacious defense. She tallied 22 digs against Wharton County and 24 versus Lee College, averaging 4.6 digs per set for the week.

Ivanova was the league’s top setter averaging 11.5 assists per set in San Jac’s two wins last week. The 5-7 setter from Chicago (Von Steuben Metropolitan Science Center) also tallied 33 digs, two service aces with zero errors, one block and two kills, including the match winner against Lee College. Ivanova ranks 10th in the nation in assists per set with a 10.15 average.

Tenth-ranked San Jac (26-7) closes out the 2009 regular season Friday, Oct. 23 at Coastal Bend and Saturday, Oct. 24 at Laredo. The 2009 Region XIV tournament is slated for Nov. 6-7 on the campus of Wharton County Junior College.
