Surgical Technology

The operating room has become a place of true wonder. Constant breakthroughs in surgical technologies are giving patients amazing outcome. Put yourself on the forefront of surgical advancement with a degree from sanjac. This intense program will give you hands-on instruction on the complete workings of the OR. You will learn to prepare equipment, surgical supplies and medications, pass instruments to surgeons and assistants, hold retractors, and monitor counts. You will also learn to operate sterilizers, lights, suction machines, endoscopy equipment, assist with lasers and robotic equipment, prepare specimens for lab analysis, apply dressings, and transport patients. The surgical technologist is a highly valued player on any hospital’s staff, with immense responsibilities. Many also go into specialized practices such as ophthalmology, neurosurgery, orthopedics, and reconstructive surgery. Others become technical specialists or sales reps for surgical equipment companies. You might even decide to come full circle and teach the latest batch of surgical tech students.

Information--Spring 2015:

*If you attended the September or October mandatory Surgical Technology information session, you will be permitted to sign up for the two spring HPRS prerequisite courses when they become available for registration in mid- to late-November. An email will be sent, based on the email address provided on the sign-in sheet at the information session, alerting these individuals that the courses are open for registration. If you did not attend one of these information sessions, you will not be permitted to sign up for the spring offering of the prerequisite courses.


All students are required to attend a mandatory Surgical Technology information session. Curriculum changes which will affect entrance into the surgical technology program beginning in Fall, 2015, are in the approval stage. Once final approval for the curriculum changes has been received, more information about new prerequisite and program requirements will be placed into the San Jacinto College website.
