Entering her fifth season, San Jacinto College head coach Sharon Nelson is in an enviable position.

Nelson’s program is coming off an appearance in the NJCAA national tournament, and are Region 14 champions.

Leaving the high school ranks to come to San Jacinto College in 2002, Nelson came in believing the Ravens could and therefore would achieve more. She committed to recruiting not only talented players, but also those who would fit the San Jacinto College mold. With 90 wins over the past three seasons, Nelson is obviously doing things right.

“We are fortunate to have so many talented players in the Houston area and across the state want to come here to play,” Nelson said. “We want the best players we can get, but we also want those who we think fit our style.

“Obviously success on the volleyball court is great, but we want well-rounded student-athletes who are also going to do great things in the classroom. That’s an attitude we stick by when we’re out there recruiting.

”So for 2006, the goals are the same. Put together the pieces, improve daily, and make a run at the national tournament. The formula, altered a bit to include players from other states, otherwise remains the same.

The proof of Nelson’s ideal is in the wins. After all, she’s in an enviable position as leader of a Region 14 championship team.
