Chancellor

Dr. Brenda Hellyer, San Jacinto College Chancellor

Dr. Hellyer is our fifth chancellor. She arrived in 1996 as the first director for the San Jacinto College Foundation. In 2000 she became executive vice president for resource development. She was appointed vice chancellor of fiscal affairs in 2003 and served as the chief financial officer for five years. In May 2009 she became chancellor.

Dr. Hellyer’s leadership has been instrumental in a number of significant wins for the College: the passage of a $295 million bond referendum, obtaining and implementing the Achieving the Dream grant, and reaccreditation, to name a few. She also helped engineer some major initiatives. These include developing a performance management system for staff and faculty, creating a facility master plan, and reorganizing from three colleges to one entity that operates on three campuses.

Dr. Hellyer has served on chambers of commerce, economic development councils, in city and county government, and non-profit organizations. She led the Hurricane Ike recovery effort at San Jac in 2008. Though we sustained significant damage, we were able to reopen all three campuses and the district office in less than three weeks. Dr. Hellyer and her team also created an instruction model to allow students to complete the semester on time. The model earned high praise from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools during the reaccreditation process.

A licensed CPA, Dr. Hellyer holds a B.S. in Accounting from Fort Hays State University in Kansas and two degrees from the University of Texas in Austin – an MBA and an Ed.D. in Community College Leadership. She is married with three children and two grandchildren. Her free time is focused on family, friends, travel, and riding her bike. Plus, she hopes to get back to her piano lessons soon.
