1. Apply for admission.

The application process if very simple, and you can do it all right here online.

2. Gather transcripts and evaluations.

We will need official transcripts or notarized copies from your high school as well as any colleges or universities you have attended – either in the U.S. or abroad. We also need proof that you have had these transcripts evaluated by an accepted evaluation company from this list.

3. Gather your English proficiency test scores.

Classes at San Jacinto College are taught in English, so we need to find out how well you know the language, so we can direct you into the proper classes. Depending on your scores, you may be admitted to our academic programs, or we may determine that you need more help learning the language and direct you into our English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program, which gives you more preparation before entering our academic programs.

You can enter our academic programs if you prove that you’ve met our English proficiency requirements by taking any of the following tests and achieving these scores:

TOEFL: 525 paper-based, 193 computer-based, or 69 on Internet COMPASS ESL: 92 Reading, 92 Listening, 94 Grammar / Writing IELTS: a score in the Band 5 range MELAB: 79 in each section – Essay, Grammar, Oral

You can enter our ESOL program if you take any of the following tests and achieve these scores:

TOEFL: 330 paper-based, 53 computer-based, or 16 on Internet COMPASS ESL: 35 Reading, 42 Listening, 36 Grammar / Writing

Note: If you score below these levels, you can improve your English through the non-credit ESL program, which is taught through our Continuing & Professional Development division.

You are exempt from meeting the English proficiency requirement if you come from one of the following countries:

Australia, The Bahamas, Belize, Bermuda, Cameroon, Cayman Islands, English speaking Canadian provinces, Fiji Islands, Gambia, Ghana, Guyana, Jamaica, Kenya, Liberia, Malta, Nauru, Nigeria, New Zealand, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Tobago Trinidad, United Kingdom, Virgin islands, West Indies, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

4. Compile financial information.

We want to make sure your education won’t be interrupted by lack of finances, so we require proof that you have at least $15,300 of financial support, which is the estimated educational and living expense for one year at San Jac. If you’re bringing family we will need proof of an additional $5,000 for your spouse and $2,500 for each child.

There are two ways you can provide this proof:

Affidavit of Support This is for U.S. citizens and permanent residents. It should be filled out by the person who will financially sponsor you. It must be notarized / certified.

Letter of Financial Backing This is for non U.S. citizens and non residents. It should be filled out by the person who will financially sponsor you. It must be notarized / certified.

Your sponsor must also provide one of the following, showing amounts in U.S. dollars:

A U.S. Income Tax Return statement.

A statement on bank letterhead and signed by a bank official that certifies the sponsor’s name, date the account was opened, average balance, and affirmation that deposits have been made over the last year.

A statement from an employer on company letterhead and signed by a supervisor that certifies the sponsor’s name, date of hire, permanent or temporary status, job description, and salary.

5. Fill out SEVIS Transfer Release form.

Download the form and fill out the top half. Then have your international advisor at your current school fill out the bottom half.

6. Make copies of passport and Visa information.

We will need a copy of the first page of your passport showing your name, date of birth and expiration date. The expiration date must be more than six months away. We also need a copy of the Visa page from your passport, your I-94 card, and all previous I-20s.

7. Apply for an I-20.

You need your I-20 in order to apply for your F-1 Student Visa at the U.S. Embassy.

8. Fill out other information forms.

The Supplemental Information Form gives us important data we need such as your emergency contacts as well as information on your home country. The Information Release Form must be filled out only if another person in the U.S. needs to receive any of your application documents, including your I-20.

9. Mail all of the above documents to us.

Once you’ve gathered everything above, mail it to the campus you plan to attend:

10. Get your I-20.

Once we receive all of your documents, an international student advisor will send your I-20 in the mail. You are now ready to enroll at San Jacinto College.

8. Get your I-20.

Once we receive all of your documents, an international student advisor will send your I-20 in the mail. Your SEVIS ID number will appear in the upper right corner of the form, and our school code will be at the bottom of box 2. You’ll need these for the next step.

9. Get your F-1 Student Visa.

Take your official I-20 to the American Embassy in your home country to apply for your F-1 Student Visa. This allows you to come to the United States and enroll at San Jacinto College.

10. Pay your SEVIS fee.

This $200 fee covers the cost to issue and maintain your F-1 Student Visa. The payment must be accompanied by Form I-901, and there are three ways you can submit it:

On the Internet This is the fastest and easiest method. You can fill out Form I-901 online and pay the fee by credit or debit card. Be sure to print out your receipt.

By mail You can send a paper Form I-901 along with an international money order or check from a U.S. bank, payable to: I-904 Student/Exchange Visitor Processing Fee. By Western Union Quick Pay Service Go to a Western Union location and ask for the Blue Form that says “Payment Services” or “Quick Pay” at the top. This allows you to pay in your country’s currency and send the I-901 and the payment electronically.

3. Obtain a Concurrent Enrollment Letter.

Go to your international student advisor at your current school and get a letter that states you are eligible to attend both schools at the same time.

4. Make copies of passport and Visa information.

We will need a copy of the first page of your passport showing your name, date of birth and expiration date. The expiration date must be more than six months away. We also need a copy of the Visa page from your passport, your I-94 card, and all previous I-20s.
