6-3 Excessive Absence
The College Catalog of Courses offers the following information about student attendance:
At the point a student is absent for 8.33 percent of the contact hours of the course for unexcused reasons or reasons unknown to the instructor, the instructor may, at his or her discretion, withdraw the student. (To find the number of contact hours, multiply the number of weekly classroom and laboratory hours as shown in the course description by 16.) Three unexcused tardies count as one unexcused absence.
An instructor also has authority to drop a student when, in the opinion of the instructor, a student has accumulated absences (including excused absences) to such an extent that there is no reasonable expectation that the course can be completed successfully. An instructor may award the temporary grade of "I" (Incomplete) only under certain circumstances. (For more information see the Incomplete’s section in the college catalog.)
To drop a student, the instructor fills out an Excessive Absence Report, which may be obtained from the Registrar's Office.
