Immigration
Passport
Your passport must be valid for at least six months from the date of enrollment. It is your responsibility to check the expiration date in your passport and have it extended at least six months before it expires. Your passport can be renewed by an official consulate of your home country in the United States. Note: A passport is a difficult item to replace. If you send it for renewal through the mail, be sure to request certified delivery with return receipt.
Visas and Special Student Visa Requirements
The visa issued by the embassy indicates the period during which you may enter the United States and the number of entries permitted. The date on the visa stamp does not govern the length of time you may remain in the United States after entering.
The student visa is issued solely for the purpose of pursuing a full-time course of study. This means you must enroll in at least 12 semester hours (approximately four classes) each fall and spring semester. A student entering the United States for summer school is required to attend the summer session; otherwise, the student is not required to attend summer school.
I-94 Card
Upon entry to the United States, the immigration official issues a small, white card (Form I-94), which is stapled to the passport. You will be required to fill in your first name and surname on the front of the card. You should use exactly the first name and surname listed on your visa. This card should be valid for "duration of status (D/S)", or for as long as your student status is maintained. The I-94 card should be surrendered when leaving the United States, except for visits of less than 30 days to Canada, Mexico or the Caribbean Islands.
Form I-20
The I-20 form will be issued by SJC to those nonimmigrant students accepted for admission. This form, along with your Letter of Financial Backing and secondary financial documents, are required when filing for your F-1 visa at the embassy in your home country.
The student copy of the I-20 should be kept in your possession at all times. It will serve as a record of all transactions with Citizenship and Immigration Services regarding your student status. All authorizations for school transfers, permission to work, and reentry to the United States will also be noted on this form. This form should not be surrendered when leaving the United States for a temporary absence.
