General Information
- The applicant is responsible for registering for the appropriate examination. READ ALL INFORMATION CAREFULLY.
- Registration applications can be obtained and must be turned in to the Testing Center (Room 133, Administration Building at the Central Campus, or at the South Campus Testing Department, room 3234 Longenecker Building). Fees must be paid before your testing request can be processed. The preferred payment method is by credit card; however, personal checks and money orders are accepted. The check or money order should be made payable to CLEP. Payment is due at the time of registration, but fees will not be processed until the test is administered. All forms of objective CLEP testing is done via computer.
- No more than two (2) CLEP exams may be taken during one testing day. Students taking the Freshman College Composition exam with essay should know that the exam consists of two separate 90-minute tests-----an objective test and an essay.
- A maximum of thirty (30) semester hours may be earned at San Jacinto College from a combination of CLEP examinations, Advanced Placement (AP), and/or departmental examinations.
- A student must have earned at least three (3) semester hours of course work at San Jacinto College before credit for CLEP, AP, or departmental examinations can be posted to their transcript.
- Students will not be allowed to take and receive credit for CLEP examinations if they have received a grade (A,B,C,D,F,I) in a course. But, they may take and receive credit for a CLEP examination for a course in which they received a W (withdrawal).
- If the student is unable to take the CLEP exam on the date scheduled, the check or money order payable to CLEP will be returned. Taking an exam on a subsequent test date will require a new registration process.
- CLEP requires a six (6) month waiting period before retesting is allowed.
- CLEP exams are administered on computer. Each exam is 90 minutes long. Some examinations in Composition and Literature also have an optional 90 minutes essay section that is required by some colleges. Understand the policies of the institution you will name as a score recipient. Each school has its own policy on CLEP credits.
- You will receive your unofficial candidate score report upon completion of the exam. Official scores will be sent to your recipient institution in 5-10 business days. Official scores must be mailed directly from CLEP prior to the awarding of credit for exams passed. San Jacinto College will send notification to the students’ home address advising them of the process to follow in order to have credit added to a transcript.
- If you have taken English Composition with Essay, you will receive one combined score after the essay has been scored, usually one to three weeks after your test date. If you do not want your scores reported, you may select that as an option at the end of exam before you see your scores. No fee refunds will be made. Canceled scores cannot be reinstated, and canceled exams cannot be taken again for six months.
Credit
- A student may choose to receive official test results on the test day. CLEP will send official results to the designated school or institution approximately three (3) weeks after the test is taken. Students who are eligible for credit at San Jacinto College District will be notified by mail once official test results are received at the college. Students interested in receiving credit from other colleges or universities need to contact the particular institution(s) for information about their credit-by-exam policies and procedures.
- San Jacinto College District requires that credit for the Freshman College Composition CLEP exam be based on both the objective test (90 minutes) as well as the essay test (90 minutes). The Freshman College Composition essay is scored by members of the San Jacinto College English faculty. Standards applied in scoring are those used to score essays of students who have completed the San Jacinto College course in Composition I (ENGL 1301). In order to receive a passing score on this exam, students must demonstrate mastery of the expository writing skills taught in Composition I (ENGL 1301). All CLEP essays must be written with black ballpoint pens. All essays are the property of San Jacinto College District.
