During any given season San Jacinto College North has some 15 former players in the minor leagues and several in the Major Leagues. In addition to Andy Pettitte and Roger Clemens, current Major Leaguers include: Jesse Crain, Mike Gonzalez and Ryan Jorgensen. Crain, who pitched and played shortstop for the Gators during the 2000 and 2001 seasons, is off to a fast start with Minnesota. The Twins’ primary setup man for closer Joe Nathan, Crain went 12-5 with a 2.71 ERA in 2005 and won 15 of 20 decisions to start his career. Gonzalez made his Major League debut with the Pittsburg Pirates in August of 2003. Today, he is among the big league leaders in most strikeouts per nine innings and fewest walks per nine innings. In 2004, he was third in strikeouts per nine innings behind Brad Lidge (Astros) and Eric Gagne (Dodgers) and second in walks behind Billy Wagner (Phillies). Now the Pirate’s closer, his current stats of interest include a 2.48 ERA, 119 strikeouts in 101.2 innings with only 43 walks.Gonzales was a Gator in 1997 and was named Most Outstanding Pitcher at the 1997 Juco World Series. Jorgensen, a Gator catcher in 1998 and 1999, made a big league appearance with the Florida Marlins in August 2005 before returning to AAA. His status was uncertain at press time. |
