Volleyball headed to national tournament for third-straight year PASADENA, Texas - The San Jacinto College volleyball team is headed to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national tournament for the third-straight season, after winning the Region XIV tournament this past weekend in Galveston.
San Jac (28-11, 12-0) defeated Alvin, 3-0, in the semifinals, and Laredo Community College, 3-1, in the championship match to earn its third-consecutive berth in the NJCAA tournament. San Jac is seeded 10th and will play seventh-seed Barton Community College (Great Bend, Kan.) at noon on Thursday, November 15, 2007. The national tournament is being held at the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs, Iowa, November 15-17.
“This is our third-straight trip to nationals,” said sixth-year head coach Sharon Nelson. “We finished undefeated in conference play, and dropped only one set during the Regional Tournament. We faced Barton County earlier this season and, in a close match, ended up victorious. But we know that this will be a different setting and that our team will have to step p to the challenge in order to defeat them again. This is what the girls have worked for all season, a chance at the national title.”
San Jac won the regional title for the third-straight season, and the fourth under Nelson's reign, behind the solid play of sophomores Lindsey Schindler (Hallettsville High School / Hallettsville, Texas) and Ligia Clemente (Sao Paulo, Brazil). Schindler leads the conference, and ranks 10th in the nation, in blocks per game with a 1.622 per game mark. Clemente is 25th in the country with a 1.264 per game average.
