The San Jacinto College women’s basketball team wore pink t-shirts during warm-ups of its game against Kilgore College on Feb. 16. The team raised over $600 to help find a cure for breast cancer. |
At the Feb. 16 game against Kilgore College, the San Jacinto women’s basketball team sported pink t-shirts during warm-ups, and many team members wore pink shoelaces, headbands and wristbands during the game. The team also handed out pink carnations during introductions. Many players gave their carnation to Judy Silman, a two-year breast cancer survivor and mother of SJC head coach Shawn Silman.
All proceeds from the sale of concessions from that day, along with many generous donations, will go to the Susan G. Komen Houston Affiliate for the Cure. The team raised a total of $636, all of which will stay locally in Houston to help fight the disease.
“I am pleased with the turnout and the results of our fundraising efforts for the Susan G. Komen Houston Affiliate for the Cure,” said Silman, who is wrapping up his 12th year as head coach of the San Jacinto College women’s basketball team. “It provided the team a wonderful opportunity to be involved with something that has the potential to make a difference in people’s lives. The girls truly embraced the effort and were anxious to participate in this initiative.”
The women’s basketball team will close out the 2007-08 regular season Tuesday, March 4, 2008, at home against Tyler. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m., at Nichols Gymnasium located on the North campus at 5800 Uvalde Rd., in Houston.
