HOUSTON – The San Jacinto College South campus student success center, along with the office of student life and career and employment services, recently opened its doors for students who have never utilized their services.

Chelsea Paschall, San Jacinto College South campus counselor, offered students free career testing during the student success center open house.

We’re always holding events for the students who consistently use our services, and we felt it was time to reach out and inform the rest of the student body of what we do,” said Shelley Rinehart, South campus student success center counselor. The event featured free Marble Slab ice cream, tutoring, and career testing.

The career and employment center provides support and assistance to all San Jacinto College students and graduates regarding their future career and job search. The services at the center range from career assessments, an online job database where local employers list their position openings, help with preparing cover letters and résumés, advice about interview strategies, general labor market information, and connecting students and employers through career and job expos.

Other services offered to San Jacinto College students through the Student Success Centers are academic advising, to ensure students are taking the proper classes for their major; personal counseling for students needing a short-term personal counselor; admissions assistance; financial aid assistance; student life activities, to involve the students on their campus through various organizations; and more.

“When I first entered the doors of the student success center I was a blank slate concerning my math skills,” said Edith Fuselier, a San Jacinto College student. “Their staff provided me with the valuable tools and skills to achieve a 95 on my first test. The success center helped me achieve my goals and I would recommend it to anyone.”

While the College provides student services on each of its three campuses, students must visit several locations on campus in order to benefit fully from all of the services. “I think if the College could provide students with a ‘one-stop-shop’ student success center, it would make for a much more enjoyable experience,” said Earl Godfrey, San Jacinto College South campus’s dean of enrollment services. Godfrey also believes that if San Jacinto College can offer this type of facility, it will be the first of its kind for community colleges in the state of Texas.
