Barfield named NJCAA Division I baseball player of the week

HOUSTON – San Jacinto College baseball player Jeremy Barfield has been named the Ringor™ National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) player of the week, the organization announced Wednesday.

During the week of April 14-20, Barfield, a 6-5, 230-pound outfielder from Spring, Texas (Klein High School), was the top run producer for the team. Barfield started last week by going two-for-five at the plate with one RBI, four walks and two runs scored. He then had an unbelievable weekend in a three-game series against Laredo College going seven-of-11 in the series with two doubles, three home runs and 11 RBIs. He also drew three walks and scored seven runs. Barfield’s three home runs each went over the “Green Monster” at John Ray Harrison Field, which is 410 feet from home plate and stands 40 feet high. San Jac was 4-2 on the week.

For the week, the son of former Toronto Blue Jay Jesse Barfield, hit .529 and drove in 12 runs on just nine hits and reached base safely in 16 of 23 at-bats. Barfield was a selection to the all-tournament team at last year's Junior College (JUCO) World Series and is ranked as the 67th best junior college pro prospect by Perfect Game Crosschecker.

San Jacinto College will next head to Mt. Pleasant, Texas, for the Region XIV Tournament May 10-14, 2008. The winner of the regional tournament advances to the JUCO World Series, May 24-31, 2008, in Grand Junction, Colorado.
