Baseball slugs out 11-4 win at Region XIV tournament

MT. PLEASANT, Texas — San Jacinto College’s balanced offensive attack keyed an 11-4 win, Saturday, over Panola College in first round action of the Region XIV tournament, at Northeast Texas Community College in Mount Pleasant.

San Jacinto College’s right fielder Jeremy Barfield is congratulated by teammates after he slugged a two-run homerun in the fifth inning in opening rond action at the Region XIV tournament.

Four different San Jac players slugged home runs and the team combined for 10 hits, with the decisive blow being a grand slam by left fielder Kris Miller in the bottom of the third inning. Right fielder Jeremy Barfield, shortstop Danny Hernandez, and first baseman Devin Shines also knocked in homeruns for San Jac.

San Jacinto College’s starting pitcher, left-hander Kevin Angelle, struggled early, facing seven hitters and giving up two runs in the first inning. Angelle continued to struggle in the second, and after a wild pitch to start third, head coach Tom Arrington pulled him and brought in right-hander Jamie Bagley. Bagley kept Panola’s hitters off balance by mixing in a riding fastball with a sharp breaking slider.

“It was great that Bagley picked up Angelle,” Arrington said. “Jamie came in there and attacked their hitters and it was also key that he didn’t put guys on with walks. On offense, when Miller got the big grand slam, that seemed to just give us a big lift and we just kept it going from there.”

San Jac (43-12) will face Angelina College (30-14) on Sunday, May 11 at 5 p.m. Follow the San Jac baseball team during the Region XIV tournament online at http://www.tsrnsports.com/.
