MONOPOLY raffle winner to donate $10,000 prize money to charities

PASADENA, Texas – The grand prize winner of the San Jacinto College Foundation’s 2008 Masquerade at MONOPOLY® will donate the $10,000 prize to four local charities.

Ken Phelps, owner of Phelps State Farm Insurance Agency in Pasadena, won the reverse draw raffle and grand prize at this year’s fundraiser event. Phelps is a longtime supporter of the San Jacinto College Foundation. The grand prize was $10,000, which Phelps opted to donate to four different charities. Thanks to the generosity of Phelps and his wife Alicia, the San Jacinto College Foundation, Sagemont Church, Sarah’s House and The Wheel House will each receive a portion of the winnings.

“I believe in each of these organizations,” said Phelps. “My wife Alicia and I felt this was a great opportunity to help them out.”

The San Jacinto College Foundation supports students through scholarships. Proceeds from employee raffle ticket sales and raffle tickets sold at the event will provide 107 book scholarships for deserving students. Phelps’ donation to the Foundation will go into a general scholarship fund.

Phelps himself is a graduate of San Jacinto College, and has been actively involved with the Foundation since its inception in 1996. His wife often volunteers at Foundation events, and his father serves on the Foundation’s Board of Directors. Ken Phelps and the Phleps family have also previously established a scholarship with the San Jacinto College Foundation in honor of Wynell Phelps, his mother.

“The Phelps name is synonymous with giving back to the community,” said Wayne Webb, Foundation Board Chairman. “Ken and Alicia have once again shown their commitment to our college, and more importantly, to the students who will use this donation to better their personal life and become a productive part of our community.”

Other winners from the evening include Kathy Roosa, vice president of instruction San Jacinto College South, $250 shopping spree; Buddy Harris, dual credit director at the College’s Central campus, $100 shopping spree; and Kathryn Chatwin, accounting assistant in the Central campus business office, Astros package.

San Jacinto College Board of Trustees Chairman Marie Flickinger, and Vice Chairman Dan Mims, were co-chairs for this year’s Masquerade at MONOPOLY® event.
