Introduction - Pharmacy Technician
Program Objective
The objective of the Pharmacy Technician Program at San Jacinto College is to provide graduates with the skills and knowledge that will enable them to qualify for entry-level positions in pharmacies as well as prepare for national certification.
What Is a Pharmacy Technician?
The Pharmacy Technician is a health team member. Working under the supervision of the pharmacist, the technician performs those tasks associated with the preparation and distribution of medication.
Job Opportunities
By 2012*, the demand for Pharmacy Technicians will rise 29 percent due to the expansion of retail pharmacies, the increased number of middle-aged and elderly people, and the increasing roles and responsibilities of pharmacy technicians. Good job opportunities ae expected for full-time and part-time Pharmacy Technicians with formal training or previous experience. That means more employment opportunities for you!

Program Overview and Certification
The Pharmacy Technician Certificate of Technology Program is a two-term curriculum that requires a student to complete a 24-27 term hour program that totals 704-764 contact hours. The emphasis of the program is on training students to work in retail, hospital, and home infusion pharmacies. The program includes two clinical courses. The first clinical is a 144-contact hour, two term-hour credit external learning experience course that take place in a retail pharmacy. The second clinical is a 160-contact hour, two term-hour credit external learning experience course that takes place in a hospital pharmacy. Students who successfully complete this certificate program should be eligible to take the National Certification Examination for Pharmacy Technicians administered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board, the accrediting board for pharmacy technicians.*

Applicants for the program must:
- Meet the college's general admission requirements as well as the program admission.
- Have a high school diploma or GED.
- Complet Compass/Thea Test (Testing Center: San Jacinto College North or South Campus.
- Submit transcript of course work completed at other colleges or universities.
- Complete a background check application and submit to a PreCheck Inc. (Please call the Pharmacy Technician department for further details.)
