New Student Orientation FAQs

New Student Orientation is a very important step in your transition to becoming a student at San Jacinto College. This experience will provide you with the opportunity to meet other new students, current student leaders, faculty, and staff.

You will leave orientation with the information necessary to be successful at SJC. You will also have an opportunity to meet with an academic advisor / counselor to determine your class schedule. At the end of orientation, there is a guided registration.

Yes, orientation is mandatory for all first time in college students, including previous dual credit students. ESOL students and transfer students are not required to attend. ESOL students will be required to attend orientation once they complete their language program. International students (F-1 visa) are also required to attend orientation, as well as a separate orientation specific to international students.

Yes, however you will need to contact the First Year Experience Office to sign up instead of using the online sign up system.

Yes, you have to reserve your spot at orientation. Walk-ins are not allowed.

You can reserve your spot for orientation through your Student Online System (SOS). Once you log into SOS, you will immediately be taken to a page where you can sign up for orientation.

The available dates are listed on the Student Online System.

Yes, there are day and evening sessions. Online orientation is available immediately prior to the start of a term.

Yes, parents or significant others are welcome to attend. Space is limited however, so we restrict the number of visitors per student to two. When you sign up for orientation, be sure to indicate how many guests you will be bringing.

No, we encourage you to make alternative arrangements for childcare so that you may get the most of your orientation.

While we encourage you to attend a campus orientation, there is an online orientation available for those who cannot make it to a campus session. The online option is generally not available until the week before classes begin and all on campus orientation sessions are over.

No, there will be a hold on your registration account until you have attended orientation.

Orientation is a three-hour program, with guided registration after orientation is over.

College policies, terminology, technology, resources, success strategies, and a campus tour (not available in online orientation).

Once you have completed orientation (either on campus or on line), and you sign in to SOS to register, you will be asked to complete a survey on your knowledge of what was discussed in orientation. You must answer these 6 brief questions before you will be able to move on to registration.

The hold will be released at the end of campus orientation, after you complete the orientation survey. Once the survey is complete, you will be able to participate in guided registration. For online orientation, the survey is available approximately 30 minutes after you complete the on line orientation.

You may reschedule your orientation session by signing back into SOS and choosing the reschedule option.

You will need to make sure to attend the entire orientation to get the hold released. If you will be late or need to leave early on that date, we recommend that you choose another orientation date.

No, orientation must be completed before you can register for classes. For situations such as this, there is an online orientation option.

There are two reasons this may happen. 1. You must sign up for online orientation before the on line orientation link is activated. If you have not done this, it may be why you are getting the error. 2. You may have signed up for a campus orientation session. To take online orientation, you will need to sign in to SOS and change your session to online.

You will receive an email to your San Jac email account and to the email account you used to complete your application. The email will contain all the information about the orientation session you signed up for. You can also sign in to SOS and view your scheduled session.
