Writing Center Information
The Writing Center has moved to the first floor of the renovated library, building C-21.
About our Move
All of the tutoring centers on Central Campus (the Math and Science Resource Center, the Student Success Center, and the Writing Center) have merged to form one tutoring center in the library where all of your tutoring needs can be met. We still offer all of the same services as before, now just in one location known as The Student Success Center. In our area, we have thirty computers, a print station, and four study rooms, not to mention all of the same resources you were able to check-out before. Make sure you stop by to try out our new area and feel free to call us at 281-478-2779 with any questions you may have.
Fall & Spring Hours
Monday - Thursday: 7:30 am - 9:00 pm
Friday: 7:30 am - 3:00 pm
Saturday: 10:00 am - 2:00 pm
Sunday: 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm
The Best Kept Secret on Central Campus?
Imagine a place on campus where you can go to get free tutoring on your writing. Where friendly, experienced folks are ready to help you get started on that paper, teach you effective techniques of self-editing, explain the ins and outs of research formatting, and find the answers to such nagging questions as: who or whom? where do I stick that apostrophe? and, how can I stop those run-on sentences?
Too good be true? Not this time. Where does this hotbed of tutoring excellence take place? We are conveniently located on the first floor of the library, building C-21.
No assignment too big or small. No writing project of any nature turned away. No judgment about your writing skills. We don't even make you make an appointment. We just want to help you become a better writer.
Please bring your assignment and whatever drafts you might have. We have computers you can use and plenty of resource books and handouts. Come on by.
The Writing Center is an instructional facility designed to provide writers in the San Jacinto College Central community with tutors to help their writing projects at any stage of the process, from planning to revising. Our primary purpose is to help all writers improve their thinking and writing skills.
Hours of Operation
Tutors work one-on-one with you for up to 30 minutes at a time, on a first-come, first-served basis. There is no charge for sessions. Please come at your convenience, whenever we are open.
San Jacinto College Central
C-21, first floor of library
Our tutors can help you:
- understand the assignment
- brainstorm a topic
- focus your thesis
- strengthen evidence
- learn revision strategies
- improve editing and proofreading skills
- format research citations
- develop your resume, cover letter or job application essay
What our tutors will do
Tutors will work one-on-one with you to enhance your success as an independent learner. To this end, tutors will teach you methods of generating ideas to get started and finding a focus for your writing project, developing and organizing your ideas, and finding and correcting your usual errors in grammar and mechanics. Tutors will also review research formatting rules (MLA, APA, etc.) with you to help you avoid plagiarism. Above all, tutors respect your authorship of your paper.
What our tutors will not do
Tutors will not write, edit, proofread, check, or correct students papers; accept dropped-off papers; grade or predict a grade for a paper; or discuss a paper written by another person. Tutors will not take responsibility for the quality of the final product you turn in for a grade.
To get the most out of your session:
- Bring your assignment sheet and any relevant texts
- Bring your notes and drafts
- Don't wait until the day your assignment is due to come in for help
- Plan your time so you can come back more than once to work on the assignment
